On this second week of 52 Things of Beauty, I would like to introduce to you my friend, Michael. Michael lives in Memphis and therefore when he asked me to paint something for his living room, I chose to paint the Memphis Bridge over the muddy Missisip’. Raise your hand if as a kid you have held your breath crossing it? It’s harder than you think! The cool thing is Michael just bought a new home, hence the need for the painting…and he has been inspired to help those who are without one.
“For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command, you shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy, and to the poor in your land.” – Deuteronomy 15:11
Michael went to college with my husband, Casey, at the University of Tennessee. If you are ever in need of someone to request Rocky Top approximately 4 to 9 times at a wedding, then he’s your guy! He is a lot of fun, but also very considerate. When he comes to visit us, he brings gifts to the babies, makes his bed when he leaves, and always writes a thank-you note without anyone asking him to. What other guy does that?
Sorry, ladies! I know all that got your attention, but he happens to have a super sweet girlfriend named Kimberly. She helped him come up with the idea to make these awesome bags to give to the homeless in their community. They chose to help the homeless as their way to pay it forward for the painting.
Thank you Michael and Kimberly for spending the day serving others! If you live in the Memphis area and want to help the less fortunate, there is an organization called Memphis Union Mission that you can find here. http://www.memphisunionmission.org/individual-opportunities The following items are ongoing needs for this incredible organization, and volunteers are encouraged to do a donation drive for any one item, or any combination there of:
- Non-perishable food (canned goods, rice, pasta, sugar, flour, etc.)
- Men’s clothing and accessories
- Winter caps during cooler weather
- Gloves during cooler weather
- Coats during cooler weather
If you are looking for something to do this weekend, grab some friends and pick out a couple of items off the list. Help make the world a more beautiful place!
